The Data

According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NDOT), the following statistics from 2019 are true:

  • 1,470 people lost their lives in crashes
    • This is a 1.9% increase from 2018
  • 125,232 people were injured
    • This is a 0.2% decrease from 2018
  • 285,074 traffic accidents were reported
    • This is a 1.2% increase from 2018
  • Out-of-state drivers were involved in 6.8% of all reported accidents
  • Out-of-state drivers made up 6.6% of all driver fatalities
  • 72.7% of all accidents happened between 7:00 AM and 6:59 PM
  • 14.02 people died per every 100,000 people
  • 25.6% of all deaths were speeding-related

Cyclists

Pedal-cyclists include all non-motorized road vehicles propelled by pedaling:

  • 27.8% of pedal-cyclists who lost their lives were between 60 and 69 years old
  • 18 pedal-cyclists died
    • This is a 5.9% increase from 2018
  • 183 motorcyclists died
    • This is an 8.9% increase from 2018
  • 2,847 motorcyclists sustained injuries
    • This is a 3.2% decrease from 2018
  • 916 moped, motor scooter, or motorbikes were involved in accidents
    • 3.5% of the accidents were fatal
    • 84.7% of the accidents caused injuries

Pedestrian

  • 10.1% of all pedestrians involved in a car crash lost their lives
  • 231 pedestrians lost their lives in car wrecks
    • This is a 2.7% increase from 2018
